OUR 2010 FLOAT IS SCHEDULED FOR MAY 22ND, PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS.... ---------------
Our donations this year will be channeled through the “Heart Ball – of Johnstown” an affiliation of the American Heart Association.
Once again, we will sponsor a kayak-canoe float. But this year you're invited to a (bring your own food) tailgate party at the finish afterwards. Participants are invited to attend either or both events. When: Saturday - May 22, 2010 – Pledges, donations and registration forms will be collected the morning of the float - Be there early - 7:45 - 9:00. Launch time - 10:00 am, sharp. We hope to launch "all at once" this year. Please listen to announcements during the morning of the float.
Differences from last year:
***Due to the volume of participants and the volunteer staff being stretched to the limit – we are NOT accepting early registrations through the mail or advanced tee-shirt orders. Both will be offered at the registrations tables during the morning, before the float. We also cannot be responsible for bringing rental kayaks and canoes to the launch site. We will provide contact information, should you decide to rent a boat, and we’re assuming the outfitters will bring the boats to the site, and pick them up again at the finish. Each participant will be responsible for their own rental details. We highly encourage participants to call early, or borrow a boat if they are in need of one. ***
No Storm Date: The event will be held on May 22nd. With so much preparation and planning, we are going to go with the float on that day. WE ADVISE: PLEASE BRING EXTRA CLOTHES - and to plan on changing at the end of the float. The tailgate cookout will have some protection for the live entertainment, but tarps, umbrellas, etc., are welcome too. Campers! Be prepared. A cooler, small grill, folding tables and lawn chairs are also good ideas.
Location: Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. Further information, exact location, and driving directions can be found on the related pages. Check back here often as updates are added.
Checks or Money Orders made payable to:
The American Heart Association.
Tee-shirts will be available for purchase at the float launch site and at the tailgate afterwards. We intend to order 350 tee shirts (random assortment of sizes). First come, first served. 2010 Shirt designs are shown below. (shirt design by Marcy Jay) 814.207.3727

All tee shirts are $10.00 - available at launch and at the tailgate afterwards.

Registration and pledge forms are available on the following pages. You may copy the forms, sign up, and begin gathering pledges at any time this spring.
Please ask your family, friends and neighbors to donate (a flat amount, or so much per mile). [See the Registration page.] All cash should be converted to check or money order (by the participant, ie., the person floating) to ensure that it gets to the charity. Checks and money orders should be kept in a sturdy envelope, with the registration form, and brought to the float. Volunteers will be present to collect the donations and pledges. We make every attempt to NOT handle cash.
We will include raffle ticket prizes and a 50-50 drawing this year.
Donations for the raffle can be found on the "special thanks" page.
If you would like to donate a prize for our raffle, do contact one of us below:

If you don’t have a kayak or canoe, please try to borrow one. *** See rental info below: This is a leisure trip with no white water or dangerous rapids, but do dress accordingly. There is a good chance you will get wet. Wear old tennis shoes or water shoes rather than sandals or flip-flops, just in case you have to get out and right your kayak. A cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen are good suggestions too. Also bring a towel, a set of dry clothes, and shoes so you can change at the finish, should you need to do so. And, DON’T FORGET A LIFE JACKET for each person participating. You could be fined for navigating PA waters without a life jacket. You only have to wear it if under age 12, but you must have one in your possession at all times while in your boat.
Don't be embarrassed by forgetting a paddle. Steering could be difficult without one.
Rubber rafts and flat-bottom boats are welcome.
Drivers of vehicles will drop off the kayaks and canoes at the starting point any time prior to launch. Participants will then be instructed to park the vehicles at the finish point location. A bus will be available to transfer participants back to the start. To make sure you have a way back to the start, we highly suggest that you unload your kayaks and canoes no later than 9:00 AM. The bus will depart the finish area at 9:35 AM and return the participants to the starting area. We hope to launch promptly at 10:00 AM.
AS SOON AS YOU REGISTER, please see that your drivers move their autos to the finish. Last year, too many participants waited until the last minute to move their vehicles. Driving directions will be issued at the registration table.
Check back often for details. Spread the word! This is a great cause!
The excursion will be approximately 10-11 miles long. It may take 5 to 6 hours to complete. Those that paddled last year made the trip in about 3 hours. Those that floated, without much paddling, made the trip in about 5 hours. Naturally, water conditions may change each year. We suggest bringing a snack and beverage while kayaking. Please take your containers and packages with you after snacking, and please do not litter along the river. We hope to provide porta-potty facilities this year, at the start, along the way, and at the finish.
The PA Fish and Boat Commission is aware of this event and participants must abide by all PA waterway laws.
Please keep your dry clothes and towells locked in your car at the finish. Taking them with you for the actual float is not a good idea.
There will be two or three locations where you can opt out of the float, should you need to do so. Further instructions provided before launch. There will be an open bath house - lav available at the mid point of the float. Porta-potties will be available at the start and at the finish. Free camping is available at the finish after the tail-gaite. Outhouses will be provided, no showers - only the river.

If you cannot borrow a canoe or kayak, we are working with two outfitters and one campground in the area in case you might need to rent or borrow one. Fat Jimmy's and Rothrock Outfitters will provide rental boats, and will bring them to the site. They will also pick them up for you at the finish. But you must call there in advance to arrange your rental. . The Woy Campground DID NOT TRANSPORT BOATS last year. It will be up to each boater to transport their own boat if your rental is done through Woy. Please examine carefully any boat you pick up on your own, from Woy. Some boats last year were not in good condition. A faulty boat is not the responsibility of the organizers of this charity event.
